When an astronaut goes out to space, he finds himself in extreme temperatures. Therefore, NASA wished to create a material capable of maintaining the thermal comfort for astronauts both under extreme heat and under extreme frost. The development of such a material started in 1988 and it was used in space suits at the beginning of the nineties. Considering the excellent properties of the Outlast®, materials, the easy maintenance thereof, the adequate price and the possibility to use the properties of such a material in almost any fabric, it was soon clear that Outlast® would not end up only in the astronauts´ space suits but that it would have a great potential to be used by the broad public.

As early as 1991, the Outlast Technologies, Inc. company has obtained the patent to use this technology on a commercial basis and has been searching for the ways of application. It shows that Outlast® fits perfectly for all applications in which the human body needs to fight temperature changes. Since 1998, the first clothes containing the revolutionary Outlast® material layer has been available on the market. .

The Company History

Founded in 1990, the Outlast Technologies, Inc company is seated in Boulder, Colorado, the U.S.A., with its European seat in Heidenheim, Germany, and with its Asian seat in Tokyo, Japan. The Outlast® technology was formerly developed for the NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations. In 2003, it obtained the prestigious "Certified Space Technology™". Today Outlast® has over 96 issued patents and 59 patents applied for, related to the materials with temperature thermo-regulation.

The company is a leader in the field of thermo-regulating materials that work on the principle of the phase change of the matter (PCM). It offers a number of options of materials containing the Outlast® intelligent technology, and co-operates with over 300 brands engaged in the fields of ready-to-wear clothes, footwear and bedclothes. Besides these traditional fields of application, Outlast® is actively used in other fields as well, namely in the packaging and furniture industries, in the military industry as well as in the medical science and in a number of other fields.

Each product containing the Outlast® technology is subject to testing during the manufacturing stage to guarantee the maximum level of quality and reliability.

Outlast® Uses the Phase Change of the Matter

Can you remember the phase change of the matter from your physics lessons? When the matters change from the solid state to the liquid state, they consume the heat and accumulate it. When they change from the liquid state to the solid state, they release heat. This is also the way Outlast works. The fabrics containing the Outlast® layer contain the microscopic fabric particles in their fibers which best accumulate and absorb the heat and/or release it, taking into account the temperature requirements of the human body. The material changing the phase is hidden inside the microscopic capsules that are highly resistant – they do not liquefy, adapt to the volume changes of the internal material and are resistant to mechanical damage to withstand the processing of the clothes and the subsequent wearing of the clothes.

Outlast® is formed from microscopic spheres called Thermocules®. In fact, the cycle of the phase change of the matter constantly occurs in the Thermocules®. As the heat accumulator, it never gets exhausted. Such spheres are inserted directly into the fiber from which fabrics are woven, they make a part of the special layer of the footwear laminates or are applied to the unwoven textiles. Outlast® is totally invisible at the first sight, it does not change the fabric structure and the appearance, either. All clothes may even be washed in the washing machine. In addition, Outlast® can be used anywhere – in the space, in Greenland, in the Czech Republic, and practically for any purpose – even for the bullet-proof vests.

Outlast® is unbeatable in terms of the feeling of the ideal thermal comfort. It is not too hot and not too cold. It is just right.

Outlast® balances out the temperature changes in both the internal and the outer environment and an agreeable microclimate between the skin and the Outlast® layer. Thanks to its capability to repeatedly accumulate the heat and to subsequently release it, it maintains stable temperature all the time.

Outlast® can provide both heat and cold. It depends on what your body temperature is and whether you need to get cold or get warm. Easy, isn´t it?

Therefore Outlast® can also reduce sweating!

While the major part of the materials reducing the sweating work on the principle of the fast and thorough sweat draining from the body, Outlast® directly reduces the sweat formation. How is that possible? Let´s remind us how the sweat is formed. We are sweating when our brain evaluates the situation and finds out that the body is too hot. Then, it sends out a signal to cool down. At that moment, sweat droplets start jumping out. However, Outlast® prevents that – it immediately takes the heat away from the body and accumulates it in the Thermocules® capsules. When evaluating the situation, the brain finds out that the body temperature is in order and it is not necessary to cool the body down. Therefore, you sweat much less.

OUTLAST®

The NASA scientist developed Outlast® as a material capable of accumulating and releasing the heat. If used in the textile industry, it helps forming the stable micro-climate between the skin and the textiles.

THERMOCULES®

If watched under a microscope, Outlast® looks like small spheres attached to the textile fibers. The fabric which accumulates heat, changes its phase of the matter. In order not to leak out and\or to evaporate, it is covered with a layer firm enough to stand the wearing and the manufacturing itself of the clothes.
